It was dark again when Julius heard his wife’s voice. This time, the words she spoke were clear and intelligible, though it took effort on his part to focus on the meaning.

“I’m worried about him,” she said. “He’s been drifting in and out of consciousness for two days now.”

Julius let his eyes fall closed again. Keeping them open seemed like too much effort. He was content just to lie there and listen to the soothing sound of her voice.

“I know. I am, too. He needs a doctor. I think he has malaria, or maybe yellow fever. I’m not sure. He definitely has a concussion, and his leg… broken for sure. It’s not good.”

Julius recognized this other voice. He had heard it before, he was sure. Still, it took him a moment to put his finger on just who was speaking. Mr. Albert. Frank’s one-eyed associate.

“What are we going to do?” Natalia asked. Her voice was filled with emotion, and even though he couldn’t see her face clearly, Julius could tell that she was on the verge of tears.

“Hey. Hey. It’s okay. It’s going to be all right. Come here.”

The professor heard his wife sniffling, heard her begin to sob. Then her sobs were muffled, almost as if she were crying on someone’s shoulder. Julius’s eyes popped open.

Across the clearing, he saw two figures in the flickering firelight. A tall black man with his arms wrapped around a bare-legged white woman. It was Mr. Albert and his wife, Natalia. On the ground nearby, Frank was snoring loudly.

“Tomorrow, I’ll go for help. We can’t be more than ten kilometers from the coast. Maybe I can signal a passing ship or a plane. I’m certain someone is looking for us by now.”

“But what if they’re not. Our plane wasn’t supposed to be anywhere near Molonga. What if they are looking in the wrong place. What if there is no one there when you get to the coast?” Natalia asked.

She fired her questions at him in a quick barrage, scarcely pausing for breath, let alone leaving him time to answer. It was something she did when she was excited or worried. Julius suspected she was both at that moment.

She had stopped crying but hadn’t stepped away from the man who had comforted her. Julius watched them from the shadows through half-closed eyes. It dawned on him suddenly that they still thought he was unconscious.

“Then, I’ll do what I did last time,” Mr. Albert said. “I’ll build a raft and make my way out into the shipping lane. Someone will see me.”

“But that could take a long time,” Natalia protested. “Julius needs a doctor now.” She slipped from the black man’s embrace and stepped forward toward the campfire. She crossed her arms and stood looking at where he lay in the shadows. “If anything happens to him…”

“I’ll do what I can. I promise. I’ll get help for your husband. You can count on me, Talia. In the meantime, you’ll have to keep him hydrated. I showed you some of the edible fruits and berries.
